At D&D Classic Cars, we typically don’t dabble in the foreign car markets, but we are making an exception with this offering. While technically a European Car, the MG, or more specifically the Morris Garages cars made an enormous impact on the US Automotive Scene. The earliest MG’s came to the USA by way of servicemen returning home from WWII and bringing along with them the MG TC Midget. These little cars immediately became popular all over the states and are largely credited with the beginning of the sports car obsession that would influence American Cars for decades to come. As it stood, later production of MGA and MGB models would prove to be vastly more popular in the US than in Europe, with more than 75% being exported to the states. While these cars weren’t for everyone and were actually marketed as such, their small footprint and simplicity were in high demand amongst many Americans. The small cars were fun, versatile, and fun to drive, and many Americans feel in love with them for these attributes. Today we have your opportunity to own a piece of that joy and fascination by way of this 1978 MGB Convertible. This car came at the end of the MG era being manufactured just two years before the company shuttered at the hands of the European Government, but still has many of fundamental features that people grew to love about the brand. This car is offered in a very pure state as it holds onto nearly all of its original elements. It includes the original and smooth running 1.8 Liter 4-cylinder engine and the conventional 4-speed manual transmission. The exterior of the car is in good condition but does show some signs of decades worth of love and daily cruising. The Hunter Green Paint has some minor blemishes around the body of the car and displays a couple areas of rust and bubbling on the lower edges of the Rocker Panels. While the paint is not perfect, it is still in overall respectable condition and would make a pleasing companion for weekend drives with the wind in your hair. This car also features the trademark rubber bumpers that came to fruition as a way to suffice US crash standards in the 1970’s. The interior presents a tan cloth upholstery and the customary black dash, all of which are all in quality condition as well. The car has recently received several new enrichments which include, carpet, seat coverings, 4 Pirelli P4 P85/65/R14 Tires, fuel pump, fuel filter, battery, alternator belt, upper/lower radiators hoses, boot cover, hood padding, and ignition switch. One additional upgrade to this vehicle is an aftermarket Optimus AM/FM/Cassette player that was installed at some point during its lifetime. The car has been fully inspected and all fluids have been changed, making sure this car is ready for many more years of love on the road. As the ads used to say, this car “is not for the ordinary man,” but owning one “says more about you than you would ever say about yourself.” These cars were always aimed at a specific demographic in the states. These cars were viewed as a statement piece and an everyday driver for those edgy enough to step outside the confines of the preverbal box that Americans were placed in. While specifically a European born car, this car was probably more so American at heart, and this car has all the qualities to continue making bold statements for years to come.
